The length of the belts made a differeence in bale density as well, after replacing splices about three times, I got new belts. I would also check on your cylinder as someone else mentioned, that could well be a problem as well. When baling straw, it is more difficult to make a solid bale, but again, more twine helps.īefore buying the Vermeer, I had an IH 243 baler, never did make a good bale with that one. I got a lot of repeat business from satisfied customers because my bales were tied well and stored better. If I got in a hurry and stingy with the twine on a big job, the quality of the bales suffered. I never had a net wrap, wonder if that would not help make a more solid bale as well, but no experience to speak about. More twine means a tighter bale that will not squat as easily, even after a winter storage outside. Finally, I double tied my bales, customers said there was more twine on my bales than anyone else used. It has been mentioned driving slower helps as well, that depends upon the type and amount of hay in the windrow. I had a vermeer twinrake that made an even 5' windrow, that was the first step in a good bale, an even amount of hay flowing into the baler. I would say the raking and windrow are the most important step too. Also crowd both sides of your baler hard that does help. If I pick up a windrow straight from the haybine, same baler settings and you can't hardly drive a spear into it. I have a NH 650 and if I try to bale behind a 254 NH 2 rotor rotary rake, I can't make tight bales for anything. Having a soft core doesn't help them start a bale anyways, since they HAVE to start on the pickup, then roll back into the belts after the first few inches ( try starting a bale with the tailgate open if you want proof ). Could also be that someone has set the stop on the cylinder to make a soft core, they will squish with a soft core. West Central Alberta Coldest, wettest edgeĭoes the pressure gauge come up immediately? If there is air in the cylinder the core will be soft. Just keep in mind this baler is around 30 years old, it won't hang with the new ones. Also if the springs have mud/grease caked between the coils, getting them clean out will also help. A 5' wide or a little better would be ideal. Increasing the pressure of the hay on the side wall of the baler will add bale density. If you can make a windrow that is 5' wide that would help. Got a 605f and we have been trying to get it to make tighter bales.
